In this thought thing, I wanted to think about what to actually call these thought things.
Physically, or digitally, they are simply a sort of glorified text file. Generally, in Obsidian-speak, they are called “notes”. In TM’s vocabulary, “blob” also seems a decent name for them; it is “unassuming” and gives the impression of “I don’t really know what this is but it’s just a thing”; it doesn’t pretend to be some kind of mighty entity that represents a dignified, standalone thought.
But then, I like that “note” sounds like “node”, because fundamentally, in a digital garden thing such as this, with internal linking (via wikilinks), that’s what these text files become - nodes in a network representing all thoughts TM has ever digitally externalised.
So, I think I’ll, for now, use the terms “thought”, “note”, “node”, “blob” interchangeably and any differences may emerge from consistent usage. Ultimately, these files can be thought of as just thoughts, or, “thought objects” - an object representing a thought, pertaining to some other object (which itself may be an aggregation of other objects).
Fri 31-07-2026 Actually, today I was thinking that these kind of notes are generally more of a collection of thoughts as opposed to a singular thought, so perhaps wouldn’t be very accurate to call a note a thought. So, the current main ways I refer to these note things are:
- Note
- Node
- Blob
- Object where “thought” could be prepended to each to mean the same thing.
